La Bhagavadgītā è il dialogo tra Srr Kṛṣṇa, Dio, la Persona Suprema, e Arjuna, Suo devoto, Suo intimo amico e discepolo. Arjuna rivolge alcune domande a Kṛṣṇa, che risponde presentandogli la scienza della realizzazione spirituale. La Bhagavadgītā fa parte del Mahābhārata, che fu compilato da Srila Vyasadeva, l’avatar-Scrittore, apparso sulla Terra 5000 anni fa per mettere per iscritto la saggezza vedica a beneficio delle generazioni future.
Il Mahābhārata è la narrazione storica delle straordinarie imprese del grande re Bharata e dei suoi discendenti fino ai tre figli del re Vicitravirya: Dhr̥tarāṣṭra, Pāṇḍu e Vidura. Dhrtarawa, come figlio maggiore, avrebbe dovuto ereditare il trono, ma a causa della sua cecità congenita il potere toccò al fratello minore Pāṇḍu. Pāṇḍu ebbe cinque figli, Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula e Sahadeva; Dhr̥tarāṣṭra ne ebbe cento, di cui il maggiore si chiamava Duryodhana.
Dhr̥tarāṣṭra non accettò mai la supremazia del giovane fratello e allevò i suoi figli animato dalla determinazione che un giorno essi avrebbero regnato sul mondo al posto dei Pāṇḍava, i figli di Pāṇḍu. Così Duryodhana e i suoi numerosi fratelli crebbero impregnati delle ambizioni paterne, del suo orgoglio e della sua avidità. Pāṇḍu mori prematuramente e i suoi figli furono affidati alle cure di Dhr̥tarāṣṭra. Quest’ultimo attentò più volte alla loro vita e a quella della loro madre, Prtha, chiamata anche Kunti. Ma le congiure del cieco Dhr̥tarāṣṭra furono sventate grazie soprattutto al santo intervento di Vidura, zio dei Pāṇḍava, e alla protezione affettuosa di Sri Kṛṣṇa.
I guerrieri e i comandanti dell’epoca, gli kṣatriya, osservavano il codice di cavalleria che proibiva loro di rifiutare una sfida al combattimento o al gioco. Abusando di questo codice, Duryodhana ingannò al gioco i cinque fratelli Pāṇḍava e riuscì a privarli del regno e perfino della libertà, costringendoli a un esilio di dodici anni. Trascorso questo periodo, i Pāṇḍava tornarono alla corte di Duryodhana per chiedergli un territorio su cui regnare, perché secondo il codice kṣatriya un guerriero può svolgere soltanto la funzione di proteggere o di governare. I Pāṇḍava erano disposti ad accettare anche un solo villaggio, ma Duryodhanil li schiacciò col suo disprezzo: non darà loro neanche la terra sufficiente a piantarvi un filo d’erba.
Arjuna e i suoi fratelli non ebbero altra scelta che ricorrere alle armi. Cominciò così una guerra di enormi proporzioni. Tutti i grandi guerrieri della Terra si riunirono, chi per mettere sul trono Yudhiṣṭhira, il maggiore dei Pāṇḍava, chi per contrastarlo, e attaccarono battaglia a Kurukshetra. La lotta non durò che diciotto giorni ma causò la morte di 640 milioni di uomini, il che ci fa intuire il grado di perfezionamento raggiunto dalla civiltà vedica, soprattutto in materia di difesa. A quell’epoca non solo si conoscevano le armi nucleari (brahmastra), piu sottili delle nostre, ma anche le armi fisiche e altre ancora, che agivano nell’acqua, nell’aria e nel fuoco, e tutte con un grande potere distruttivo.
Torniamo ai primi istanti della battaglia: appena gli eserciti si riuniscono Sri Kṛṣṇa tenta d’intervenire in favore della soluzione pacifica, ma trova Duryodhana deciso a governare la Terra a modo suo e pronto a disfarsi dei Pāṇḍava, la cui esistenza minaccia il suo diritto alla corona.
I Pāṇḍava, puri devoti del Signore e di alte virtù morali, riconoscono Kṛṣṇa come Dio, la Persona Suprema; mentre i figli di Dhr̥tarāṣṭra, privi di tale virtù, non vedono la Sua natura divina. Kṛṣṇa si offre di partecipare alla battaglia, rispettando i desideri degli avversari: Egli non combatterà di persona, ma ordinerà al Suo esercito di raggiungere un campo, mentre Lui stesso andrà nell’altro, dove agirà come consigliere. I Pāṇḍava scelgono di avere Kṛṣṇa dalla loro parte e Duryodhana vede unirsi alle sue forze militari l’esercito del Signore.
Kṛṣṇa diventa così il conduttore di carro del Suo caro amico e devoto Arjuna. Inizia la Bhagavadgītā. Gli eserciti sono schierati in ordine di combattimento e Dhr̥tarāṣṭra, inquieto, chiede al suo segretario Sarìjaya di descrivergli la situazione: “Che cosa hanno fatto i miei figli e i figli di Pāṇdu?”
